Driving up the sandy track through almost 20 acres of olive groves set in rich red soil, one is struck by the timelessness of this peaceful landscape that’s remained largely unchanged over generations. Imagine the surprise at discovering the immaculately restored Tenuta Masseriola in this historic setting, with its Puglian heritage more evident than most. In a renovation that was just as painstaking at the mother farmhouse, Masseria Moroseta, the exposed stonework or soft tuffa (or ‘tuff’ bedrock) and the original buildings were carefully preserved in keeping with its surroundings.
Today, two modern structures surround the circular stone trullo or lamia and a blissfully inviting rim-flow lap pool takes in an absolutely classic view over the olives. By early evening, it’s the enchanting glow of the sunset lighting up this expansive outdoor entertaining area that has guests returning time and again. Old meets new with ease, allowing guests to maximise the joys of good food (great kitchen to cook in!) and extended alfresco summer living.
Today there are nine beautifully restored properties spread around the Valle d’Itria, mostly within 15 minutes of each other and each one benefits from the amazing services the Moroseta team offer, in addition to contemporary interiors with high-tech kitchens and modern-day luxuries of air conditioning and central heating. And you don’t have to self-cater if you don’t feel like it: seasonal breakfast, lunch or dinner dishes can be delivered, or an expert pizzaiolo (pizza chef) can be booked to cook authentic Italian pizzas. Equally, massage therapists and yoga sessions – and even personal trainers will come to you.
What we love!
- That staying in a private villa gives you privacy, yet little towns nearby are easy to explore, and yet day trips to historical Lecce and fascinating Matera are easy if you hire a car.
- Puglia has some undiscovered gems such as Martina Franca and Locorotondo (one of the 9 whitewashed towns of Puglia). Car-free streets give way to picture-perfect alleyways, balconies ablaze with summer flowers and quieter piazza’s than the traditional tourist towns.
- With enough time at hand, book a cookery course in Brindisi with Francesco and Julie, who teach traditional Apulian dishes in their home in Oria (Brindisi), with ingredients sourced from local cheesemakers, farmers and winemakers.
- You can also book their boat, Margherita Moroseta II, moored in the port of Gallipoli – a glamorous way to spend the day sailing this beautiful coastline and coves on the west coast of Puglia.
What you need to know…
- Gourmet communal-table dinners are held at the main farmhouse, Masseria Moroseta, but their talented young chef now has an international following … chat to us re booking ahead. Dinners are only on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from 8pm.
- The minimum stay is four nights during low season (November to April), and seven nights in high season (May to October).
- The nearest beach is only 7km away in the Torre Guaceto Natural Reserve, and Carovigno is the closest town, with the white town of Ostuni just 15-minutes’ drive (worth exploring on foot and discovering its characterful back streets).
- Tenuta Masseriola is 15 minutes from Brindisi Airport and one hour from Bari Airport.
- Housekeeping is included every second day, with bed linen changes every fourth day.
