For those who’ve longed to experience the extraordinary, stark beauty of Soussevlei, to look out over the vast desert plains of the Namib, to imbibe that distinct sense of timelessness, this one’s for you. This desert is ancient and surprisingly diverse when you look just a little closer; deep purple mountains, red sands and butter-yellow grasses are just the first layer of this ethereal landscape.
Plains Camp is comfortably at home in the sweeping NamibRand Reserve, and you will be too from the moment you arrive there. You may sense that the camp is personal, and it really is. Wolwedans owner, Stephan Bruckner, designed the camp himself because he wanted it to be the most beautifully secluded and exclusive desert villa imaginable. He truly thought of everything and created a masterpiece of light-living and exquisite space. Add serenity and stillness from the desert surrounds and this is nirvana for lovers of remote, but thoroughly luxurious, places.
The villa – built entirely of canvas and timber – comprises a relaxed living space that includes a lounge and dining area, a study and fully-equipped kitchen. That’s important, since the villa has a private chef to conjure delectable meals for all. The central living area, which reflects the surrounding desert hues in decor, is flanked by four en-suite luxury tents, each with its own private deck and ‘chiller’ pool – and there’s also a communal pool to temper the heat of summer.
Plains Camp is truly the ultimate secluded getaway for a family or group of friends wanting to completely escape the world. If ever you dreamed of a decadent desert home, this is it. On hand is also a private vehicle and guide for you to explore the area a little further. Or take a lazy e-bike ride along the desert sand tracks and breathe in pure air and enjoyment. You won’t see another soul, but will feel perfectly safe in this eternal sandscape.
Wherever you find yourself at Plains Camp, there are unpunctuated views in every direction. As far as you can see is open space and ancient sands. These keep their stories close – of lost worlds and wisdom – and you will sense this when you are there. If you listen carefully though, stillness does speak.
What we love!

- There is as much or as little to do as you choose. Staying put at the villa is a great option too, because you can always change your mind and spring into action.
- With so many nooks and outdoor areas to retreat and relax, you can follow the shade and enjoy the desert surrounds all day long.
- Visiting the Wolwedans Village gives intriguing insights into what it takes to sustain operations that are off the grid and off the radar.
- All activities are available directly from the villa, so it couldn’t be easier.
What you need to know…
- The villa is serviced daily.
- Plains Camp runs entirely on solar power.
- There is wifi in the main living area, but no cellphone reception.
