Ideal for couples, Sardinia’s Casa Gallo is a two-bedroom villa set on secluded Casa Pantaleo Estate, within walking distance of historic San Pantaleo village. Known for its crystal-clear waters and idyllic coves, bustling marinas and pretty villages, the Italian island of Sardinia has its own unique character. Loved equally by the jet-set and laid-back bohemian types who return regularly by luxury yacht or fly in for a heady summer escape, Sardinia’s charm is all the more alluring when you discover a romantic hideaway tucked up in the hills.
Casa Gallo is conveniently within walking distance of the historic village of San Pantaleo – voted one of 19 ‘Most Beautiful Italian Villages’ by The Telegraph. The main stone farmhouse on the estate is the restored, five-bedroom Casa Pantaleo which was restored at the same time as Casa Gallo and both are completely private retreats with magnificent views of rocky outcrops surrounding lush gardens.
‘After 18 years in Asia,’ says the owner, ‘I already had experience in the design, build and management of a luxury villa in Bali so happily set about a total reconfiguration and renovation. Both villas retain their traditional exteriors but have been transformed by the addition of bi-fold doors, neutral floors and tiling, and high-spec fittings throughout. Furnishings were imported from Bali and the UK to ensure both houses are of the same standard and decor to work perfectly together or as independent rentals. My experience of tropical living also made indoor-outdoor living a priority to me, so both properties enjoy comfortably furnished terraces, outdoor kitchens and panoramic views.’
Long summers and relatively mild winters make Sardinia a year-round destination for an eclectic mix of visitors: by midsummer, the marinas bustle with the arrival of luxury yachts and sidewalk cafes and markets fill to the brim with everything from flowy dresses and cashmere to artisanal deli foods. Travellers in-the-know come for a quieter retreat off-season to enjoy this string of characterful villages, coves and marinas without the high-season bustle, often to walk or hike the mountain trails or charter a boat for the day from the marina at Portisco, a few minutes’ drive away. Is there anything more magical than sailing out with a delicious picnic on board, to enjoy with a glass of chilled wine in a pretty swimming spot? Bliss!
What we love!
• Casa Gallo can be booked separately to the bigger Casa Pantaleo. It’s ideal for couples as it is beautifully secluded yet conveniently close to everything.
• San Pantaleo village is charming: it’s only 2km away and has shops, a chemist, cafes, restaurants and bars but walking to the local market is a must, every Thursday morning – it’s a 10-15 minute walk.
• Porto Cervo is a little further along the coast for anyone in need of a touch of glitz and glam with mega yachts, non-stop night life, boutiques and restaurants. The market is on Friday mornings.
• Cannigione, a more relaxed marina and seaside village, has a summer market on Tuesdays.
• Being able to charter a boat from the marina at Portisco, 7km away, for beautiful day out. Sail out to the beautiful coves at Isola di Soffi for the day and have a picnic onboard. The owners own a berth at Portisco with key-card access and a private parking space, which can be made available for guest use.
