Handpicked for you...

Perhaps because this house was originally a simple wood and iron cottage with a warm hearth, was built over the old sturdy foundations, it retains the essence of its spirit. Could this new home have a lovelier aspect? It is set in a well-established indigenous garden that leads down to an expanse of lawn, a salt water swimming pool, the water’s edge, a private jetty and then the largest lake in the district, the Swartvlei. In the distance, the Outeniqua Mountains are a blur of purple blue. There are no visible roads and houses to mar your view. Take one of the boats out and canoe or fish. The lake is abundantly stocked. Book in hand, climb into the hammock and hunker down. Your time is your own here. Now and then, you might catch sight of a pair of Fish-eagles on the hunt. Or after a typical lunch time braai, take to one of the four lake-facing bedrooms and nod off for a few hours. It’s your rest and reward after a day of hiking on nearby trails, mountain biking, sailing or water skiing. In their expert hands, you might just take that first step and balance long enough on skis to fly across the water, traversing the boat’s wake.

Redesigned and built in 2016,  the house is uncluttered and simply but luxuriously furnished in colours of deep blue, green and neutral tones and yet is welcoming enough to invite bare feet and the casual lifestyle that a holiday here demands. In summer you will live mostly outdoors but with mild winters, there are always ‘summer’ days. By night, gather around the hearth and remember how good it is to just talk and re connect.

In 1894, Sir John Lubbock wrote in his work The Use Of Life, ‘Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.’ It’s here that you recharge and discover after a few days, that there is very little reason to move beyond the water’s edge.

What we love!

The house, still owned and run by the family who purchased the property in the 60s, is secluded and secure.

All four suites have a lake view

The property is just a 35-minute drive from George Airport

Swartvlei beach is only five minutes away, should you want a change of scenery, and the walking and hiking trails are excellent.

There are great local food markets in George, Knysna and Wilderness but the house has its own organic vegetable garden as well as chickens and quail.

What you need to know…

Children are welcome but should be supervised as there is an open pool and the property leads directly on to the lake’s edge.

The house is rented on a self-catering basis but your hosts, in a flat adjoining the property, are happy to arrange meals for you.
