Something that the Mauritian locals often revere their island to be, is paradise on Earth. Simply put, for its sublime beaches, lush greenery, abounding nature with all kinds of species not likely to be thriving anywhere else in the world. For its invigorating island air and little pockets of purity that the discerning traveller can discover, as if for the very first time. Perhaps that’s what the owners of Penthouse Paradise in Black River consider their home to encapsulate. For its unique vantage point overlooking the ocean and Black River National Park mountain range, the estuary that meanders beneath the balconies and the expansive open-plan spaces that allow all of the light and air to flood the home with the very essence of island life. Inciting a unique experience of the West Coast, where your abode is away from the madding crowds, yet harnessed in the heart of the magic of Mauritius.
Occupying the entire top floor of the thatched contemporary apartment block in La Mivoie, just a stone’s throw from all of the best beaches, fabulous eateries and boutiques, the yacht club, cafés and convenience stores, this hideaway generously spreads itself out into the landscape. With the open-plan living, cooking and dining space at the helm, spilling out onto the main terrace where the swimming pool almost trickles down into the estuary, many a languid hours will be spent on sun loungers, swinging chairs and around the dining table. Three ensuite bedrooms dart themselves down the corridors, all opening out onto their own terraces, maximising on those spectacular views. Luxuriously laidback furnishings and vibrant pieces of art have been created and sourced locally, in keeping with the owners’ sentiment of authenticity and honouring the culture and land this magnificent hideaway inhabits. A statement on sincerity, comfort and style, as well as not to distract from the wonderment of what’s going on outside.
Throughout the hours of the day, you and your travelling clan will be spoilt for choice on what activities to do, and when to fit them all in. The property’s wonderful caretaker, Michael, will help to fine-tune those daily itineraries. From paddle-boarding and boating to beach and island hopping. Swimming with dolphin and sailing as the sun salutes the day adieu. Exploring the area by foot, heading to the yacht club for some lunch or up into the mountains of the Black River National Park for some rugged nature trail excursions. There are of course, the long, dreamy stretches of sand – some of the very best beaches on the West Coast – just a five-minute drive away from the apartment. Gather the sarongs, the sun hats and that beloved book you’ve become accustomed to carrying everywhere. Off to Tamarin Bay or Le Morne Beach where the pristine, warm waters mimic the tempo of your own internal clock. Now very much on holiday mode, slowly ticking over like the tide. You can either venture back to the apartment for a seafood feasting on the terrace, or head out on the boat again with Michael, who’ll take you to one of the neighbouring islands for a sunset picnic. There are enough days to choose what to do when, and enough wonderful people to assist you with those decisions, and escort you into their paradise. All you have to do is let the magic of Mauritius unfold, and nestle in the cockles of your heart.
