This seriously stylish Atlantic Seaboard beachfront home would make the perfect location for the next James Bond movie. As the elevator whisked us down from Clifton’s bustling, busy Victoria Road to this utterly chic and sophisticated apartment, I felt as though we’d emerged into an entirely new world of jetsetters and celebrities. We were so indulged and relaxed during our stay here that when our holiday was up, we left (reluctantly) feeling like true A-listers.
San Michele combines serene, secluded seaside living with the best of slick, cosmopolitan city style. Spanning two levels in one of Cape Town’s most sought-after apartment blocks, the home opens right up onto Clifton First Beach. With world-class Atlantic Seaboard views, the broad outside deck – complete with fully equipped cocktail bar, outdoor gas barbecue, dining table, deck chairs, surround-sound system and steps leading to the heated beachfront swimming pool and from there down to the beach itself – is surely one of the most perfect places on the planet for evening sundowners.
It is no surprise that property in Clifton is the most desirable on the entire continent of Africa. Rated by everyone from National Geographic to the Discovery Travel Channel as right up there among the very best in the world, Clifton’s iconic beaches are utterly fabulous. Fine powdery white sand meets the fresh (that is, ice-cold) turquoise Atlantic Ocean in four strikingly beautiful coves sheltered from Cape Town’s winds by massive granite boulders. And San Michele totally lives up to its glorious location. Every room throughout the apartment has astounding sea views. The gorgeous living space is both sleek and spacious. The owner’s discerning eye for contemporary design is apparent throughout, from the dramatic green-veined marble slabs that make a bold statement on the dining area walls to the streamlined furnishings that exude glamour and style.
The open-plan living space – comprising lounge, dining area and kitchen – is just made for relaxed entertaining. The serious cook’s kitchen has everything a gourmet chef could desire, and masses of fridge space is complemented by the walk-in refrigerator in the concealed scullery. But best of all is the fact that we didn’t actually have to lift a finger: this apartment is fully serviced, with a charming butler to take care of your every need. He even did our grocery shopping for us so we could chill with the kids on the beach just ten steps down from the apartment, and make the most of every holiday minute in this paradise. A chef is available on request so everyone in the family can be off-duty 100% of the time!
The bedrooms on the lower level (accessed by a lift or stairs) offer plenty of space for families: two bedrooms with bunk beds each have en-suite bathrooms and direct access to the balcony, while the master bedroom is a glorious, utterly indulgent suite that incorporates a freestanding bath and walk-through wardrobes. A real bonus of this apartment is that you have the option of a beautiful separate guest suite accessed via a lift – perfect for grandparents or extra guests who want just that much more privacy and a quiet space to call their own. We used this versatile space as a home office for one of our party who had work deadlines to meet, but it would also be a great bolthole for an au pair.

- The media room/playroom downstairs, where the kids can immerse themselves in the technological necessities of the modern era.
- The underfloor heating throughout, even on the outdoor deck so that you can enjoy this astonishingly beautiful space all year round.
