The latest addition to The Key to the Mountain Village, The Key Lodge is the perfect place to relax, retreat and reconnect with nature. Although only a four minute walk to the centre of Franschhoek, The Key Lodge with its distinct thatch roof and green shutters feels like an old-school, refined, abundant farmhouse.
Interiors throughout the Lodge were designed with attention to detail by the inimitable Jacques Erasmus (of Hemeljhuis and Jonkmanshof fame) and include his distinctive, luxurious, yet comfortable style. Signature four-posters, the finest linen and decadent baths (some with a view) are standard in all five rooms. Living areas include a cosy sitting room and library, as well as the working kitchen. Although the Lodge does not have a restaurant as such, it’s here chef Melanie cooks up delicious farm-to-table meals on order. These can be eaten in the dining room, around the pool or on one of the expansive decks overlooking the farm.
Framed by the mountains and the established gardens deep stoeps overlooking heavenly lavender tracts and abundant vineyards are to be expected. The textured green is broken up with a stunning swimming pool and the breath-taking Marieke Prinsloo water feature.
In fact the grounds are expansive and include a putting green, rugby field, two swimming dams and a tennis court; plus free bicycles are available for the short cycle to Franschoek’s main street or, for the more adventurous to explore the neighbouring wine farms.
The Key Lodge redefines luxury with its elegant, comfortable interior with a strong sense of place and low-key but attentive service; an elegant and comfortable retreat that is a lovely base to return to after a day spent exploring Franschhoek village or sampling the valley’s gourmet food and wines.
Good to know: only over 12s welcome in The Lodge
A private heli-pad makes it easily accessible for those chopping in.
