Contemporary, family friendly beach house on the cliffs
A sensitively restored heritage home on the footpaths of Eastcliff, Kwaai Rock’s location in Hermanus is hard to beat.Â
For living up to what it says on the tin, we love Hermanus. It authentically encapsulates everything you want from a sublime life beside the sea. Whatever the season, whatever your motive for an escape, Hermanus has a way of delivering on every front. Where the ocean, the nature trails, the town’s attractions and community’s benevolence nurture all aspirations a family will have of their holiday. As it is for the owners of Kwaai Rock. Who compassionately restored their 1940’s heritage home on the footpaths of Eastcliff, retaining its venerable essence, yet adding vigour with a hint of a nautical narrative.
Rising above the rugged rocks verging the coastline and gliding over the ocean like the bow of a sailing yacht drifting out to sea, this hideaway tempts you to dip your toes over the deck and dangle them overboard. As you enter through the courtyard, the portholes draw you through the open-plan spaces and out towards the waves where the whales, orcas and dolphins are likely to welcome you home. A contemporary yet cozy-seaside-cottage space unfolds where white oak timber, industrial glass doors, original stone walls and curved archways lead you through the kitchen, the dining, reclining and entertaining spaces, and out onto the long decks. The property’s perfect positioning allows for plenty of natural light to flood through the home, warming up the moody reading nooks and lazy living and TV rooms. Four ensuite bedrooms and an additional annex with a king bed beneath a bunk overlook the ocean and surrounding mountain ranges. With its two swimming pools, fireside seating, braaiing and entertaining areas aplenty, Kwaai Rock is a dreamy family abode that is likely to hold you captive in its tranquil grip, for days on end.
Whales, walks, wine and more…
When you do venture out, morning and afternoon ambles along the cliff paths as the sun rises and sets will be on the daily agenda. Watching the ocean wildlife glide through the blue. You’ll head down to some of the glorious beaches and secluded coves for long swims in the warmer Atlantic waters. There are so many lovely spots to choose from. Perhaps a round of golf at the neighbouring course, hiking and biking the mountain trails and venturing out onto real boats to see the whales up close. Taking scenic drives to the nearby villages or into the valley for wine tasting. There’s plenty for you and the clan to go seek and discover. For those less curious days that warrant a decent dose of family bonding, you’ll be gathered around the pools, snoozing on the decks, board gaming around the tables that are as crowded with tasty treats and tipples as they are with competition. Sport watching in the bar beside the fire or reading in one of the many lovely lairs. Kwaai Rock – like Hermanus – also lives up to what it says on the tin. Earnestly holding you in its sturdy stone walls that somehow set sail from time to time, with all of your favourite people aboard.
What we love!
- Enjoying an evening bath in the main ensuite with all of the windows open and the sound and salty scent of the sea wafting through.
- Relaxing on the deck, watching the resident walkers and wildlife cruise past the property – either on the footpaths or in the waves below. You feel neatly tucked away and secluded yet inclined to be social and strike up a chat or two with the passers-by.
- For those that love a warmer dip, the front swimming pool on the deck is heated. The kids love to spend hours in the water, just like the seals do below.
- Whatever the weather, Kwaai Rock is wonderfully warm with its four fireplaces and underfloor heating. Life on the coast can get chilly, so the cocooned courtyard and cosy gathering spaces are ideal for all of the seasons.
