Pebbles is an almost-on-the-beach-house in Kommetjie on the Cape’s Southern Peninsula. This clapboard home is very big and spacious and perfect for families with kids- surfers or not. The small town is relaxed and friendly and this sandy feet allowed home is perfect for entertaining the family and friends. Spend the day on the beach and warm up in the jacuzzi after or sit by the fire.
Kommetjie is perfect in that it is not too far from Cape Town city if you want to drive in though we think you’ll fall in love and want to hang out at the house mostly. The house has plenty of space and lots of love in every detail.
Pebbles was built by architect Frank Böhm and the owners built it so that they could be closer to their favourite surfing spot. “As a beach & watersports family we always loved Kommetjie for its laid-back surfer vibe, the small fishing village character with its little shops to walk to for morning croissants and newspaper and yet, at the same time, it is a short drive away from buzzing Cape Town.” Kommetjie beach is a very natural beach with lots of bird and the chance to spot some whales.
The house is named after a surf spot, Pebbles, which sits right in front of the house. This hideaway’s position offers the huge advantage of totally sheltered from the south-easter, and the best sunset viewing terrace in the whole of Kommetjie. “In winter we love to build a roaring fire and watch the storms and huge waves roll by.”
What we love!
- The scale and the light of this hideaway – it is super spacious with a vast, open-plan living area downstairs and a large TV lounge with a massive sea-facing deck upstairs. Floor to ceiling windows in both flood the space with light.
- Its proximity to the beach – it takes 30 seconds to hit the sand with vast sea views from the living areas and two larger bedrooms.
- The large Jacuzzi on the back deck – ideal for blissful holiday relaxation.
What you need to know…
- The super housekeepers are there three days a week and can service the house on other days by prior arrangement.
- There is an underfloor heating system powered by the hot water system – this does bring warmth to the space, however the heat is not as intense as with an electrical underfloor heating system.

There is a very steep staircase, with no balustrade (pictured), to the bedrooms upstairs in the main house; this may be difficult for elderly guests, and parents of young children must be vigilant. The cottage, with twin singles, is on the ground floor.
