Hideaways in Le Morne – When conjuring up images of an idyllic Mauritian holiday, a plethora of picture-perfect scenes flurry our prospective itineraries like old postcards of long, dreamy beaches with warm, transparent waters. Fancy hotels filled to the brim with kaftan-clinging, flip flop-sauntering holiday makers, spilling out of beach cafés, boutiques, bars and restaurants. You might also consider its access to the verdant nature trails and abundance of tropical bird and wildlife, the scenic boat trips and walks along esplanades. The luxury thrills, as well as the humble calm. What you might not consider, however, is the possibility of escaping from the masses and ensconcing yourself in your very own island retreat that’s tucked away from the crowds, yet a quick flip flop saunter back to the town should you and your clan fancy.
Settled around the ankles Le Morne mountain on the beautiful West Coast of Mauritius, spread out over flourishing tropical gardens, adjacent the lagoon and neighbouring golf course, this majestic hideaway lends itself either as individual luxury apartments or exclusively as a villa for multigenerational friends and families to gather together. The main fabric of the property comprises of the luxury studios – two and three-bedroomed apartments – built, decorated and adorned in local materials, fabrics and furnishings sourced from the island or repurposed possessions of the owners’ collections. The interiors have been consciously considered and stylishly executed by the owners who have a discerning eye for textiles, colours, local earthenware and cabinetry. Its rough, raw stone, polished concrete and thatch hold the spaces together with authenticity. An exposed outdoor lounging and entertaining space with a gorgeous bar, comfy seating areas sits beneath the thatch, with daybeds and recliners adjacent the swimming pool. All of the apartments have their own fully equipped kitchens where all of the feasts are prepared, to then be enjoyed around the garden or on the patios where the views continue to unfold.
Those postcards of an idyllic island getaway start to take form from the moment the kestrels and paradise flycatchers sing their dawn chorus, awakening you from that deep, deep slumber. A spot of early morning fishing with one of the locals or a paddle-boarding session along the lagoon. Perhaps a walk around the golf course, getting into the swing of the holiday. Back to Boutik Le Morne for a hearty brunch of fresh fruit and all things tropical. Then onto one of the beautiful nature trails, trekking in the mountain learning about the local flora and fauna with an experienced local guide, who’s passionate about sharing the island’s gems with you. Some snorkelling on the lagoon, or kite surfing in what is revered as one of the best spots in the world to enjoy it, followed by a bit of boat-tripping to see the dolphin, or perhaps a stroll through the town, perusing boutiques and quaffing coconut cocktails. The property’s wonderful caretaker, Michael awaits your return to escort you and your clan out on the boat, to one of the neighbouring islands for a sunset lobster grill. You’ll salute the day slowly slipping from the grip of the horizon, another day in paradise bids farewell, making room for the next to arrive. More local Mauritian magic, more curious exploring, more sun and seafood, and most certainly more real memories to come, of a very authentic experience of a very unique island holiday.
