An architectural jewel dating back to the 16th century, this immaculate historic residence is a beautiful, fun place to stay right in the middle of vibrant Lecce. But step inside the grand, arched entrance into its pretty courtyard and you’ll be met by a gracious and caring team who have your wellbeing at heart from the moment you arrive.
Besides its location, one of biggest drawcards of Palazzo Maresgallo is its inviting plunge pool set in its private garden. Fragrant with citrus blossom in summer, it’s a welcome haven of calm after exploring Lecce’s winding alleyways, churches, galleries and boutiques – a place to read, play a game of chess or sip a spritz. But even more tempting is the spa where time stands still and it’s easy to let go and be pampered. Or find yourself a comfortable chair in the Sala dell’arco in the early evenings when music fills the air in the piano nobile and tasty Salentine delights served. The Art Deco influence is felt strongly throughout as art and design merge seamlessly with its original vaulted ceilings and arches.
With one of the largest rooftop terraces in Lecce, everyone gathers here at sundown when the weather is balmy. Spectacular views extend far over potted cactus and succulents towards the Duomo. It’s a wonderfully relaxed space – simply help yourself from the honesty bar and listen to the bells and sounds drifting up from the streets below. Or lie back on the four-poster bed and simply gaze at the stars! It’s best not to hurry a visit to Lecce: there’s something rather special about immersing yourself in living life as a local. Hire a Vespa if you wish, and take the odd day trip, but time spent gently syncing with the rhythm of this quintessentially Italian lifestyle is the best way to experience the ‘Florence of the South’.
What we love!
- It’s spacious, elegant, authentic and each of the suites and bathrooms is different.
- The expansive rooftop deck with its honesty bar.
- That you in the heart of the historic city where you can live like a local, and a noble one at that!
- Palazzo Maresgallo’s small plunge pool in their private garden: a rare find in Lecce but essential in summer (take it from us though, Lecce is glorious out of season when it’s not so busy).
What you need to know …
