There are those special spots in the rugged, rural countryside of the Western Cape, that harness a holistic approach to living. A wondrous way of frolicking in the wilderness, carefree within a community of like-minded residents. Where the quaint little town, with all of its quirky happenings, manages to cultivate creativity and nurture authenticity. Where nature inspires long treks into the mountains, along rivers, and down dirt roads. Where the birds and the farm animals map out your routes as they affectionately escort you through their utopia. Such a place exists in the wonderful old village of McGregor.
Settled down one of the village’s country lanes, just a gentle saunter from the hub of the hamlet, McGregor Manor reveals its 19th-century bones, venerably polished in white and valiant in its form. Dating back to 1860, this hideaway jovially marries its heritage with a flamboyance of colour from its vibrant tiles and textiles, its curious design elements, family heirlooms, and bespoke collectibles sourced from other utopian paradises around the world. There is a playful narrative that sits perfectly alongside the peacefulness of its surroundings. All of the spaces have been curated with the integrity of the build, allowing the changing seasons of the Klein Karoo to dance their way through the living and dining rooms, down the corridors, out of the fireplaces and into the cozy beds and bathtubs, across the verandah, around the gardens, through the outdoor cottage and up onto the roof terrace. Whatever the weather, there is always a blissful respite from the extremes.
Spending time at McGregor Manor is a bit like spending time with that fabulous great-aunt who has a way of coaxing that gregarious soul to the surface. She’ll get you up and out of bed with the birds, enjoying a morning brew in the garden beside the banana palms, the peach, citrus, and almond trees, overlooking the canvas of purple coming from the artichoke patch and lavender hedges. A dip into the freshwater swimming pool that has its own micro-ecosystem, and onto one of the large daybeds, shaded by pretty parasols. After a long walk around the countryside and through the village you’ll indulge in a brunch that lasts for hours. The board games ensue as some might prefer to recline on the suede sofas or lazy loungers with a good book selected from the Manor’s impressive library. A late afternoon amble to the local pub to set the wheels in motion for a spectacular sunset on the roof terrace. The perfect spot to watch the sun move behind the mountains as the stars begin to blanket the skies. The fires are lit and the evening’s feasting begins. As does the storytelling, the shrieks, and cackles breaking the stillness of McGregor’s night air. That fabulous aunt has brought out the best you in, yet again, before tucking you into bed for another peaceful night’s rest. That’s what these special spots in the rugged, rural countryside always manage to do.
