Pointe d’ Azur – There are those certain places that we come across, that manage to conjure up a string of words and phrases in our minds, as if it’s cordially communicating with us upon introduction. Aside from being elated with meeting one another, and declaring our eagerness and enthusiasm to become fully acquainted throughout the days of our holiday, the words come flowing in. They dance through the open spaces of the home, around the furnishings, the art and the views that lead you out into the landscape. After arriving on the unique, secluded peninsular on the northern coast of Mauritius, and being greeted by Pointe d’Azur – with its eternal cloak of blue, its waving palms and its gracious, open spaces – a string of inspiring French words floated around and landed on the rattan rug beneath our feet. Even though we didn’t quite know their meaning, they sounded very romantic and alluring, and we knew, in time, we’d get to understand their sentiment.
Occupying the ground level of an avant-garde apartment block, optimising on the sensational views of the Indian Ocean, the coral reef around its ankles and the island of Coin de Mire in the distance, this hideaway whispered sweet-nothings into our ears and left us speechless. Pointe d’Azur’s beautiful open-plan living space leads you out onto a languid reclining and dining area that drifts out onto the property’s own beach – made up of sand and crushed coral – with sun loungers and comfy outdoor seating scattered beneath the trees, and an everlasting story of the sea. The three dreamy ensuite bedrooms all exude a tropical luminance that’s carried through to every room of the apartment. The contrasting hues of the ocean and textures of the earth are mirrored in its style, its little touches, its statements on contemporary comforts and laidback luxuries. The perfectly equipped kitchen is slightly secluded from the entertaining space, allowing the chefs to dish up one surprise after the other.
Those surprises will continue to unfold as the days do. The early mornings summon you to the verandah where you’ll sit with a hot brew, witnessing the colours transform with the sun’s rising. The waves gently folding like curves of glass break the dawn’s chorus of the birds. You’ll head out into the water for a snorkel or a swim and then pack a picnic, the cooler box essentials, and beach towels. Off onto a boat with the clan for some island hopping and swimming in the pristine waters of Coin de Meir and Gabriel Isle. You’ll return for an afternoon siesta on the sun loungers or beside the communal swimming pool on the first level. A wonderful spot to watch the late afternoon salute the day with the sun setting over the horizon, transforming the colours once more. Then it’s either off to one of the lovely local restaurants or another feasting around the dining table, sharing seafood curry or charred fish from the grill. The stars are out, the breeze is slight and the chatter is evoking a fluency in French. Those words ushered on arrival are starting to take their meaning as gratitude, stillness and bliss engulf the table. They’re palpable from the moment you arrive until long after you’ve departed this very special spot, on the tip of the Peninsula.
What we love!
- When you’re not enjoying your own, secluded beach outside of the apartment – the coral reef is a bit tricky to walk around, but you can enjoy a swim in the ocean – the communal swimming pool is a lovely to spot to hang out and enjoy spectacular views of the ocean.
- The style of the apartment has been competently curated by the owners’ daughter – an interior designer herself. The furnishings were either sourced or custom-made by the local craftsmen and artisans. Every space has been beautifully considered.
- Only three islands of its kind exist in Mauritius. It’s a special place for tranquility in nature, yet just a short drive to Grand Baie, to the supermarkets, restaurants and cafés. You and your clan can enjoy the stillness of the surroundings, without being overwhelmed by busy tourists spots and beaches.
What you need to know…
- The apartment comes with daily housekeeping, who are also wonderful cooks. It’s a lovely thing to head out in the morning, to the local supermarket – one of the BEST in the world – source all of the ingredients you desire – of which there is everything – and return to Pointe d’Azur to have it prepared and cooked for you. If you so choose.
- Head to Super U – every cuisine, every ingredient, every bit of inspiration you’ll need for holiday feasting.
- The property has snorkelling equipment on loan, but for all other water sports you are advised to bring your own. If you would like to take a boat trip and visit the neighbouring islands, you can do so in the town, join others or hire your own skipper for the day.
- Le Poivrier is a wonderful restaurant to head to, just a short walk away, should you wish to venture into the town for dinner.
- For a good breakfast in Grand Baie, head to Blooms – a South African owner dishing up delicious brunches.
