What was once a boutique hotel – that welcomed the likes of Nelson Mandela and Richard Branson to its secluded spot along the alluring coastline of Plettenberg Bay – Mermaid Pools is now an exclusive seaside destination for friends and families to gather, accommodating as many as twenty of your favourite people. Ensconced in 40 hectares of private coastal wilderness, perched on the cliffs that cascade down to the shoreline and the tepid tidal pool, this hideaway beckons the beach-goers that are seeking a tranquil pocket of paradise, as honorary custodians of their own portion of Plett.
The villa’s dignified contemporary form appears to have been carved out of the cliffs it sits upon, amongst the sprawling indigenous coastal vegetation that it emerges from. Set across two expansive levels of open-plan living, dining, reclining and entertaining spaces, with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors and windows, this hideaway boasts magnificent views of the ocean and its burgeoning landscape. A spa with a sauna, studio, and gym is available to those that love a little holiday body nurturing. The stylish interiors carry an earnest sentiment to its surroundings, allowing the inimitable views to do all of the talking, letting the soft luxurious furnishings do all of the listening. With all of its vastness, the villa dishes up the occasional quiet reading nook and secluded spot to retreat to – lest we fail to mention the dreamy suites that are as mammoth and serene as they come – so that you and the clan can either gather together or unwind individually.
Of course much of your time at Mermaid Pools will be spent outdoors, around the infinity swimming pool and its entertaining area. The beautiful long deck that teeters on the edge like a bow of a sailing boat. Down to the tidal pool for another dip in the wilder waters. Walks along the rugged fynbos trails, bass fishing and canoeing around the lake that rests behind the property. A visit to one of the nearby golf courses or polo grounds. There’ll be little you’ll need to leave the villa for. With the town being a 5-minute drive away and all of the wine tasting and feasting options being an easy cruise down the scenic roads, you’ll dip in and out when the time warrants. For most of it, you and your holiday clan will be savouring the splendour of your own sanctuary. As you drift out to sea, along the nature paths and back onto the sun-loungers. For days and days on end.
