A couple’s coastal retreat
Overlooking Clifton 4th Beach, tucked away from the crowds, yet front row to the sun’s spectacle, is the ideal bungalow for a couple’s seaside escape in Cape Town.
When you first think of the Clifton quads, you think of some brightly coloured cocktail filled to the brim with ice rocks and peachy flavours, packing a decent punch with each sip. A representation of summer, sunshine and good times to be had. Of course there will also be images of that pearly white sand, the turquoise waves gently rising and falling along the shoreline, and the occasional dolphin or seal surfing the waves. You’ll also think about the days that epitomise some kind of tropical Eden, chaperoned by swaying palm trees and the company of that special someone. Let’s take a brief trip to Clifton 4th Beach for a moment, and dial up the romance.
Tiered into the second row of the neighbouring bungalows that occupy this Mediterranean-type stretch of paradise, Bungalow Les Lions perfectly positions itself above the beach, totally secluded from the madding crowds. With its very easy access to and from Victoria Road (though there is a double garage for parking, which is considered gold for the area!), you can navigate your way out into the city and back home with a barefoot, beachy swagger. The bungalow beckons you in, to a lovely upstairs entertaining area – where the open-plan living, dining, cooking and lounging spaces sit. A little scullery to keep the views intact. Downstairs to a beautiful ensuite bedroom – his and hers bathrooms – and a little study or reading area. Perfect for those that might feel obliged to tend to some emails. Though it won’t be long before that gorgeous natural light inspires you to get outside. Out into the garden, onto the loungers beside the swimming pool. Resuming that sport you’ve won medals for in the people-watching Olympics. All of the beachgoers tending to their brollies and volleyball dives, their life saving training, paddle boards, cooler boxers and ice lollies. A real spectacle for those that love to sit back in the luxury and privacy of their own tranquil oasis. Listening to the birds whistle above the palms as you gaze out beyond yonder.
Serenity beside the sea
Bungalow Les Lions encapsulates the essence of life on the French Riviera. With all of the laidback loveliness of Africa. Being the perfect spot for couples, this beach bungalow generously lends itself as a dreamy retreat on the revered Atlantic Seaboard. You and your chosen travelling companion will be at liberty to rise with the waves, heading out onto the sand for a morning stroll. A quick dip with the other cold water plungers. Followed by a hot brew on the deck or the lawn. A slow morning of reading and relaxing in the sun and then off for some lunch at one of the great eateries in town or further afield in the Constantia winelands. Perhaps a visit to the Oranjezicht farmers market if it’s the weekend. Afternoons back to the bungalow and into the pool. Or the ocean. Snoozing in the comfy bed or lounging about on the sofas. You’ll either enjoy a lovely al fresco feasting on the deck or head into town or Camps Bay for an evening meal. Whatever floats your boat, whichever night you choose. You’ll come and go from this sublime seaside spot, exploring all that Cape Town has to offer, always yearning to return to the bungalow. Where that peachy-flavoured cocktail awaits. As you salute the sun and the beautiful day just passed.
What we love!
- Though the bungalow is ideally suited to two people only, it is set over two spacious levels with lots of natural light flooding through the open spaces. Plenty of areas to relax, enjoy the views of the beach and the ocean. Tend to some work if necessary in the office or around the dining table. And most importantly to simply savour the ambience of Clifton.
- The friendly community. Enjoying an early morning chat with the other residents, as you amble along the beaches. Making new friends with the regular swimmers and picnickers. People watching is considered a cathartic past-time.
- The fact that Clifton has its own microclimate – almost. When the south-easter winds perform their tempestuous gusts around the town, Clifton is remarkably sheltered. The sunrises (behind Lion’s Head) and sunsets are truly magical.
What you need to know…
- The property is no more than a 10-minute drive from the V&A Waterfront, the large shopping and convenience stores of Sea Point or Camps Bay.
- The property has a SUP board and a weber for guests to make use of.
- The residential area of Clifton is home to some lovely residents, who cherish the calm, tranquil sounds coming from the sea. Please respect the wishes of the neighbours and keep your noise levels down, so as not to disturb the peace and nature. They also take great pride in it being a Blue Flag beach, keeping it clean and pristine every day.
- The Glen Country Club is a spectacular place to go and whack a ball around the court, for all tennis enthusiasts. You’ll need to arrange the booking prior to play, but the courts are only a short walk away from the bungalow and deliver the most spectacular views of the mountain and ocean.
- Even though Clifton 4th beach is regarded as a family destination, the bungalow is not entirely family friendly as it does not cater to small children. It is ideal for couples or family members that wish to stay in close proximity to others that might be residing in the area. There are a number of steps to navigate so this should be taken into account. The swimming pool is not covered.
